Workshop outline

A mashup combines data from several sources to create something new, such as a Google map showing the location of outbreaks of swine flu. It is surprising how commonplace mashups have become: blogs, Yahoo Finance, Google, Geograph, and the latest UK police forces' crime statistics all use mashups. This introductory half day session will look at examples from a variety of sectors and subject areas and show how easy it can be to create your own.

Areas covered include:

  • how mashups work and the technologies involved
  • how to produce a simple mashup yourself
  • quality and copyright issues

There will be a practical session during which you can explore mashups for yourself and even create one of your own. Notes and instruction sheets will be provided.

The workshop leader is Karen Blakeman.
